Paroedura pictus
Paroedura Pictus geckos are commonly referred to
as Madagascan ground geckos. This specie is found on the island of Madagascar and in  Africa as well.

Make sure a shallow water dish is available at all times.

Paroedura Pictus geckos are a nocturnal, ground dwelling specie.

Diet on this species consists mainly of crickets and mealworms. Mealworms should not be fed to reptiles under the age of six months.

Daytime temperature should be approximately 85 deg f and may cool to 70 deg f at night. A small part of the substrate can be heated using an under the tank reptile heat pad.

The Paroedura Pictus geckos grow to a length of four inches and is one of the smallest gecko species in the world.

A hiding box with damp top soil or peat moss should be provided in the enclosure . The females will be drawn to this damp area to lay their eggs.

Unlike other gecko species the Paroedura Pictus gecko will breed year round. There are documented cases of females actually laying themselves to death. For this reason males should be separated from females a few months each year so females can rest and build up their  strength again.

The Paroedura Pictus eggs are extremely fragile and should not be picked up by the human hand. Using a spoon to retrieve the eggs should keep them in tact and avoid fractures. Eggs are hard shelled and should be removed for incubation.

To date all data suggests the Pictus specie have genotypic or chromosomal sex determination unlike other reptile specie where sex is determined by the temperature the egg is incubated at.

Incubation temperature for the Pictus eggs should be approximately 80 deg f. At this temperature you will produce both males and females. Incubation time is between fifty to sixty days.

Hatchling Paroedura Pictus geckos are slightly over one inch when born. Small prey items such as pinhead crickets should be provided.

This specie is not site sexable until the age of three months accurately. Males have an obvious swollen tailbase.
