Australian Velvet Gecko Care
The Australian Velvet Gecko is indigenous to the southeastern part of Queensland, Australia. This specie is arboreal but is usually found on the ground among dead trees and leaves.
Their scientific name is Oedura monilis. They are a nocturnal specie and become active only at night.
A shallow water dish should be provided at all times.
A screened enclosure is best allowing for maximum ventilation inside the enclosure.
A daily misting is all that is required to keep humidity levels in check.
Feeding consists of mealworms and crickets. Australian Velvet geckos have been know to take nectar or fruit items such as strained baby food peaches, pears, bananas, etc.
Climbing branches should be provided inside their enclosure.
A hide box should be provided with dampened peat moss or store bought top soil. The females will be drawn to this are to lay their eggs. Eggs are soft shelled and very small. The eggs should be removed for incubation.
Incubation temperature for the eggs should be approximately 83 deg f. At this temperature you will produce both male and female offspring.
Sex determination in this specie can be done accurately at the age of six months. The males have an obvious swollen tailbase.
